Crossing the USA/Canada Border

Your Responsibilities

When travelling with us on the West Kootenay/Spokane Winter Shuttle, Kootenay Charters is not responsible for your legal eligibility at the Canada/USA border. This means that:

You are responsible for carrying the required documentation to cross the border with you onto the bus (passports, visa, whatever is required for you).

You are responsible for understanding and abiding by any restrictions regarding entering either Canada or the USA.

You are responsible for the status of your legal eligibility to cross the Canada/USA border.

You are responsible for also understanding the following:

  • Illegal drugs and cannabis products are prohibited in Kootenay Charters vehicles and when crossing either border crossing.

  • Firearms and all other weapons are prohibited in Kootenay Charters vehicles and when crossing either border crossing.

  • If you are travelling with prescription drugs, they must be carried in the original container that matches the identity of the traveller carrying them.

  • All other vitamins and over-the-counter medications must be carried in their original containers with labels intact.

  • Alcohol and Tobacco may only be carried in your luggage and must be declared when crossing the border. Duties may apply when crossing the border with these products.

Some common border crossing restrictions may include having a criminal record or previously being denied entry into either country. Please note that drunk driving is a criminal offence in Canada. If you have a DUI in your home country, you will not be eligible to enter Canada.

Entry Denied

If you are denied entry into either country, Kootenay Charters is required to return you to the nearest populated area. 

  • From the Paterson/Frontier border crossing, the nearest populated area in Canada is Rossland, BC. The nearest populated area in the USA is Northport, Washington.

  • From the Nelway/Metaline Falls border crossing, the nearest populated area in Canada is Salmo, BC. The nearest populated area in the USA is Metaline Falls, Washington.

If you are denied entry into either country, you will automatically forfeit all travel fares paid to Kootenay Charters for both legs of your trip. You will be responsible for finding and paying for local accommodation as well as arranging return travel to your originating location. Kootenay Charters is not responsible or liable for your ineligibility at the border.
